Tree removal is very variable in cost, ranging from a few hundred to several thousand pounds depending on tree size and location. A very large tree in a difficult urban situation can take even a skilled team multiple days to remove. Simple small tree removals are often completed in just a few hours.
  • What is a tree preservation order and how can I find them?
Tree preservation orders, or TPO’s for short, are protective orders held and enforced by the local authority to protect specific trees and/or groups of trees. Anyone can request for a tree to be protected via TPO by filing a request with the enforcing authority, or the authority may decide to raise an order independently for a variety of reasons. In Cumbria two unitary authorities; either Cumberland Council or Westmorland Council are responsible for TPO’s. The only exception is for trees within the National Park for which planning matters are handled by the Lake District National Park Authority. You can view TPO’s on your property via your relevant Local Authority portal. We can check any preservation orders on site when providing quotation.
  • How do I obtain permission to conduct works on a protected tree?
Permission to work on a TPO’d tree can be sought by submitting application through the online Planning Portal. Homeowners can submit these applications independently, though where requests are made to remove trees due to alleged danger, the Local Authority generally requires a professional opinion from a qualified Arborist. We can assist with all aspects of the planning process from seeking permission to conducting works to specification.
  • Are there any exemptions to Tree Preservation Orders?
Under certain limited circumstances trees in a Conservation Area or covered by a TPO can be removed without prior permission. If the tree is deemed to be dead or dangerous it can be exempt from the standard application process under Section 212(4) of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (as amended) and the Town and Country Planning (Tree Preservation - England) Regulations 2012. When working under these circumstances, we will issue a 5 day notification to the Local Authority, starting the location of the tree and why removal is required. The Council have 5 days to acknowledge the notice and work can then take place. If the tree represents an immediate hazard to life works can be commenced to make safe prior to Authority notification, this is never the preferred circumstance.
